Kama Sutra

Synonymous for most with sexual positions and wild eroticism, the Kama Sutra is much more than pictures and descriptions to spice up a weekend. The Kama Sutra is actually a guidebook to all things pleasurable, sex included. In the Sanskrit of ancient Hindus, “Kama” means all things pleasurable including cultural arts, eating, entertainment and of course sex. Kama also refers to the Hindu deity of procreative, sexual nature of man. “Sutra” is simply a short book of sayings. Thus, the Kama Sutra is a short book of saying about pleasure of all kinds. When you read beyond the sexual acts depicted in the Kama Sutra you will soon realize that all areas of pleasure are indeed covered in some detail.

Sixty-Four Arts

In Hinduism, it is believed that men strive for four things - wealth, moral standing, pleasure, and enlightenment. The Kama Sutra is a guide book to these in many fashions, but particularly pleasure. There are two sections of Sixty-Four Arts within the Kama Sutra. The first is the famed Sixty-Four Sexual Arts including kissing, breathing, touch, scratching and noises – many of which are found in Tantric sex practices as well.

The less well-known section of the Kama Sutra are the Sixty-Four Cultural Arts that are encourage of both men and women. In this detailed list, the fine arts are encouraged as a way to find pleasure and enhance your moral standing. It is believed that inner beauty is as important as outer beauty. Thus the cultural section of the Kama Sutra describes the arts of cooking, conversation, game playing, dance, archery, science and many more. The Sixty-Four Cultural Arts within the Kama Sutra emphasize that pleasure is not found only through sexual activities.

Kama Sutra and Tantra

Within the detailed information of the Kama Sutra you’ll find many ideas for Tantric sex. The Kama Sutra explains the benefits and offers many ideas for enhancing sexual experiences outside of direct penetration. Aphrodisiacs and aroma are instrumental in Kama Sutra techniques and certainly have a place in the ongoing pleasure of Tantric sex.

The Kama Sutra also gives detailed instructions on the various ways to enhance sexual pleasure through clitoral stimulation. Used in both Tantric sex and Tantric massage the ten “blows” of the penis, or Lingam, used to stimulate the clitoris. There are also detailed descriptions of the reactions of the Yoni, or vagina, in response to sexual pleasure. There are even descriptions of areas within the Yoni that respond best to stimulation.

With the focus of Tantric sex on massage of the body including the genitals and then slow, ongoing stimulation though limited penetration, there is much to be learned from study and then application of the Kama Sutra. With such a wealth of knowledge and instruction, Tantric sex can be enhanced through applications taken from the book.

Working through different sections of the Kama Sutra will allow for greater intimacy and connection between partners, a major component of Tantric sex. The increased number of positions and techniques to include in love making will help to draw out the pleasure and allow for greater feeling throughout the process.
